NEW Lecture/Discussion

Generation Study Education and Training

6–7 February 2024

Wellcome Genome Campus, UK

Overview

Genomics England’s Newborn Genomes Programme is delivering NHS-embedded Generation Study, to explore the benefits, challenges, and practicalities of sequencing and analysing newborns’ genomes. The Generation Study will evaluate the utility and feasibility of screening newborns for a larger number of childhood-onset rare genetic conditions and help understand how genomic and health data could be used to improve knowledge and treatments. In addition, the Programme will explore the potential risks and benefits of storing an individual’s genome over their lifetime.

In 2022-2023, an Education and Training Working Group developed a Clinical Pathway Initiative for the Generation Study, and resources have subsequently been created.

Developed in association with Genomics England and the NHS England National Genomics Education team, this retreat aims to implement education and training in the Generation Study for the healthcare workforce, including all areas from recruitment to returning results. Longer-term and broader goals, such as increasing the understanding and applicability of genomics to screening and healthcare for the workforce in general, will also be discussed.

Target Audience

The retreat is designed for participants responsible for understanding who will need to be educated about the Generation Study, and how this training would be delivered. This may include educational or clinical leaders working at participating NHS Trusts and NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliances.

Participation is by invitation only and registration details will be emailed to attendees.

Learning outcomes

Following attendance of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the Generation Study Clinical Pathway Initiative, including competencies and resources developed to meet these competencies (Note this will be the focus of the pre-retreat virtual session).
  • Use the Generation Study Clinical Pathway Initiative to identify workforce groups that will require education and training in their Trust/regional context.
  • Explore ways to evaluate the implementation of education and training, in order to continually iterate and improve as the study develops.
  • Design an ‘Action Plan’ to implement the Generation Study Clinical Pathway Initiative for successful delivery of the study.

Programme
